Household insurance is designed to protect the insured’s property and/or contents from a
range of risks. The risks include, damage caused by perils such as fire, lightning, explosion and
theft.
All household insurance plans will include some legal liability protection as part of the basic
cover in case of accidental injury.
Buildings
Buildings insurance is a compulsory condition of a mortgage offer. It relates to the structure of
the home, including fixtures and fittings, sheds, garages, other outbuildings, swimming pools
and tennis courts and it also covers paths and patios. In addition fitted kitchens and bathrooms
are covered.
The sum insured will be calculated on the total cost of reinstating the building should the worst
happen. Certain factors affect the cost of the premiums such as, type, age, size and location of
the property.
Contents
Contents insurance provides protection for household contents and personal possessions that
belong to the insured or members of their family that live in the property.
Contents such as furniture, electronic equipment, jewellery, bikes etc. are covered. The sum
insured will relate to the total cost of replacing all the contents.
Accidental cover is an additional benefit that can be added to both buildings and contents
insurance.
