An individual who has a dependent family may need provision against the loss of earnings
caused by an untimely death. A dependent spouse or partner may not be able to earn enough
to support themselves and any dependent children. Insurance may thus be needed to cover
this.
Areas of need:
1. Where there are dependent children they may need provision against the costs of their
maintenance and, possibly education (if private education is envisaged). Protection needs may
last until the youngest child is financially independent, say 18 to 21.
2. Where there is a dependent spouse or a partner there may be a protection need.
3. For a married couple or a couple in a long-term relationship where the couple is dependent
on both partners’ earnings, there is a protection need for each against the death of the other.
